Will the real Stratus Please stand up?

Stratus claims it is no longer tied to Freeport McMoRan or Freeport's CEO, Jim Bob Moffett. Freeport has a terrible environmental and human rights record at their major gold and copper mine in Irian Jaya, Indonesia. Current Stratus CEO William "Beau" Armstrong was previously Mr. Moffett's personal assistant and was placed in his CEO role at FM/Stratus by Mr. Moffett.

Freeport McMoran spun off FMP as a separate entity in May 1992. Each shareholder got one share in FMP for every ten they held in the Freeport McMoran. FMP's game plan during the 1990s was to sever financial dependence upon Freeport, which guaranteed its debts. To that end, FMP steadily reduced its outstanding debt from $473.8 million in 1992 down to $25.5 million in 2001. Changing the name from FMP to Stratus was a further move to de-emphasize ties to Freeport.
